Dia de los Reyes holiday gift tradition |
|
Members of the Hispanic Committee recently celebrated el Dia de los Reyes with families in the Even Start Family Literacy Program, including a delivery of gifts for the children as part of this important annual tradition.
Throughout Latin America, families celebrate Dia de los Reyes on January 6 (or the Epiphany day) which commemorates the pilgrimmage taken by the three kings or "three wise men" to Bethlehem. The kings brought gifts for the baby Jesus, and from this event several holiday traditions have emerged. In fact, the tradition of exchanging gifts on Christmas Day is actually rooted in the Epiphany tradition.
"The families were all so very grateful, and we are grateful to them also. These parents all deserve tons of kudos for taking the initiative to learn to speak English, and for being actively involved in family literacy," Bautista explained. |
